While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lost most times. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on the game.

The actual improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess.
