Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough.
