Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high, along with many battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
