Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved participating in various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the greatest minds in chess.
