Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many players battling for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
